Hey, mates, I have finished this course and I noticed that is very useful to know real experiences from the common use of English, and for that I decided to create this tutorial where you can understand how to use English to reference to basic Math operations, since many times this aspect is forgotten. In English subjects, one of the first steps to learn English is the numbers, but they only taught the numbers with digits not with basic math operations, that I consider is part or a common day.

So, let’s start.

<aside> 💡 The study of the numbers, shapes, and space using symbols and rules is known as Mathematics. But, is not to common to say Mathematics, we only say Math; Math is to reference to American English, and Maths to British English.

Now, let’s explain how to reference to Math operations. And the only form to know these symbols is because Ed Sheeran put on his cover albums.

Well, we left the subtraction album, maybe within the next years.

Addition (noun)

$$ 4 + 6 = 10 $$

If we see this operation, we understood what means, but how to say this in English. First we have the operations symbols. + and =

And this operation you read as four plus six equals ten. Where ten is consider the result, in other words, the sum, and also say the sum of four and six is ten.

To reference to this kind operation the verb is add, means to put two or more numbers together to calculate the sum. Add number to number. For instance, if you add four to six, you get ten (4 + 6 = 10).

Subtraction (noun)

$$ 8 - 3 = 5 $$

We check the operations symbols. We know the = equals symbols, but what about -.

And the operation is read as eight minus three equals five. So, this is the substract (verb), to remove a number from another number. For instance, if you substract three from eight, you get five. (noticed that when you use substract verb you put first the number that remove from another number, because that number substract from another).

Within subtraction operation there is another way to reference to substract numbers. We know to read a substract operation it is read eight minus three equals five. But we can also say take away (verb - informal, but very common). So you read, take number away from number. For instance, take three away from eight. (Read as the same way that we say previous, first the number is to be substracted).
